about

This is a road song about traveling through the town of Atoka, OK-a bizarre little town with a prison, coal mine, civil war museum, one dinosaur bone, home of both Reba McEntire and Lane Frost on the edge of the Choctaw nation-all reminiscent of the many places I’ve been and seen while playing music on the road. The foolish excitement of the road can’t top the feeling of heading home to someone you love. It’s Anywhere, USA relating to the nature in all of us to keep moving, keep striving to “rise and fall like a childhood quest” and a final nod to Greg Brown, that after all the promises of “laying down” or resting, it’s just “like everything else I say”. I’ll be back on the road again. We’re all human after all.

lyrics

Atoka
-Simon Flory

Atoka I wanna roll slow but I ain’t gonna stop until where that Red River flows
When I see that Wardville sign welcome to Stringtown you’re way behind
Let’s drive until the maintenance ends we’ll sit on the hood and talk like friends
That’s one thing we ain’t done yet

Like Reba and Lane and the Choctaw strong the human condition we get right and wrong
Bags we never unpack a hook in every town to hang my hat
Let’s do something different tonite not get drunk and start to fight
Whisper my name I forget how it sounds

When I’m driving I’m a little less of a fool
Indian Turnpike take me home to you

Prisoners playing baseball it don’t get much more American than that
The Ozarks in the fall bury me where my heart is at
I’d stop in Tulsa for a few days but it’s Sunday night and I just got paid
And I want to see the stars in your eyes

When I’m driving I’m a little less of a fool
Indian Turnpike take me home to you

Headed Southwest I’ve done my best to rise and fall like my childhood quest
To fill another blank page I’m writing your name down every day
The horizon stretches ahead I’m gonna lay down before I’m dead
I know I say that all the time like everything else I say

When I’m driving I’m a little less of a fool
Indian Turnpike take me home to you

about

Simon Flory Fort Worth, Texas

It takes a perceptive ear to translate icons of a mythical “Americana” into the daily textures of real human lives, and Flory does it with the sincerity of early country music. His compositions are as much short-story sketches as they are songs, each populated – like the locales that inspire them – with those among us who have few choices. ... more
