A song about gaslighting. While the term is decades old, it perfectly describes a person’s ability to create an alternate reality-one that can take years to unpack and find “good”. It isn’t meant to place blame as the narrator is culpable in each situation, “I would lie/she would lie”, but when “the bottle’s dry” or in moments of clarity, he realizes that coming from the “darkness” of being gaslit is really an “apparition of reality”. Meant to be a song of hope for those who’ve experienced abuse or trauma-their world may appear to be a shade darker after the experience, but it will get lighter with time and work.
