Work. This is about the grind of life. Written while riding my mule, I had this fantasy of a beast of burden (my sweet boy, Merle) sprouting wings and singing “while I cut the red clay following behind” - or toiling away in the furrows of life. The narrator invites the audience to join the magical mule in flight and song by offering, “don’t let Them tell you how to live your life”. A song of defiance and inclusivity, the listener is invited to, “be a singing mule with wings”-or be themselves and be free.
