about

Learning How To Talk is about the awkward feeling of swimming in a sea of extroverts. It’s opening lines are a warning and an admission of helplessness-leading to depression and seclusion-trying to piece together where it began-in the family truck “sitting between Papa and Ma”-who didn’t know how to talk to one another. All you can do is shift gears and move on. Images of my rural, working-class upbringing, then traumatic events, inspired verse two and three, serving the listeners with, “don’t hate the ones who take life from you” and finally giving way to “I don’t want whiskey off the top shelf” about rejecting alcohol in favor of “an unbroken heart and nothing else” as a consolation for hardship and doubt. There is a glimmer of hope: it’s never too late to learn to live with yourself and learn how to talk-whatever that means for you.

lyrics

Learning How To Talk
-Simon Flory

I’m gonna talk even though you’re not listening
And I won’t stop because I don’t know how
I’m gonna stand right here like a P.O. Box
And quit chasing clouds

I’m gonna go to Kentucky
And get drunk with my sister like when we were 13
Watch the rain come across the fields
Water the garden weeds

Rust on the fenders, holes in the floorboards
Sitting between Papa and Ma
Shifting gears and learning how to talk

You gotta wake up before school
Chop holes in the ice because it froze through
The electric fence is a metronome
Keeping time and my mule at home

Billy’s got a map to where the ditch weed grows
We’re gonna mow it all down and be rich by tomorrow
There’s an accident up at the mill
Some work forever and some never will

Rust on the fenders, holes in the floorboards
Sitting between Papa and Ma
Shifting gears and learning how to talk

I’ve seen a man beg on his knees
And on a still day I see him looking back at me
Don’t hate the ones who take life from you
The wind will kick up and you’ll be gone for good

I don’t want whiskey off the top shelf
I want an unbroke heart and nothing else
There’s a tell-tale sign that I won’t win
I’m gonna talk even though you’re not listening

about

Simon Flory Fort Worth, Texas

It takes a perceptive ear to translate icons of a mythical “Americana” into the daily textures of real human lives, and Flory does it with the sincerity of early country music. His compositions are as much short-story sketches as they are songs, each populated – like the locales that inspire them – with those among us who have few choices. ... more
