about

This song was written on the same day as “Peter Mack Built A Semi Truck” in Terlingua, TX. Daisy O’Connor and I were on tour together and staying in an adobe casita in the desert-there was a walking stick with 5 legs that wouldn’t leave her door for days-resilient through a wind storm, blistering heat and freezing desert nights-a conversation about our bullheadedness in failing relationships and life ensued-as did this song. Strength of spirit and love blindness-a will to fight to the last leg (if you had six!) for someone because without love-there is no “home” to go to.

lyrics

Walking Stick
-Simon Flory and Daisy O’Connor

I’m a walking stick
I used to have six legs
I’m knocking at your door
Cause I want you more

I lost a leg fighting for you

I feel no pain
From the wind and the rain
Postman came again
Love letters from your new friend

I lost a leg fighting for you

I can’t go home
Cause you are my home

Now I’m down
To my last leg
Propped up against your door
But I’m still knockin
Because I want you more

I lost a leg fighting for you

I can’t go home
Cause you are my home
Darlin’ you are my home

I lost a leg fighting for you

about

Simon Flory Fort Worth, Texas

It takes a perceptive ear to translate icons of a mythical “Americana” into the daily textures of real human lives, and Flory does it with the sincerity of early country music. His compositions are as much short-story sketches as they are songs, each populated – like the locales that inspire them – with those among us who have few choices. ... more
